Continuous Financial Position Engine
June 2026 Close - Day 18 of 30
Finance Digital Twin: The runtime does not wait for month-end to create the books. It continuously combines actuals, deterministic forecasts, probabilistic estimates, reconciliations, accruals, provisions, controls, and evidence so Finance always knows where the books stand.
Continuous Close is not just faster reporting. It is a Finance Digital Twin that continuously calculates BP's current financial position.
The runtime does not claim that AI automatically closes the books. It shows whether books are ready to certify, what remains open, which evidence supports the position, and where controller judgment is required.
Continuous close means month-end becomes confirmation rather than a scramble.
Measured from accepted-service amount and controller-attested accrual evidence.
Intercompany mismatch before close
UK Trading posts a $9.4M intercompany charge. Singapore Trading has not mirrored it. The runtime detects the event, applies IC and materiality policy, assembles evidence, calculates close-delay impact, recommends action, and keeps the correction governed.
If we closed the books right now, what would BP's Balance Sheet, P&L, Cash Flow, accruals, provisions, exposure, confidence, exceptions, and expected variance be?
| Financial position component | Current state |
|---|---|
| Current Close Status | 93% |

| Estimated | 5% |
| Expected Close Variance | 0.3% |

This is the 10-minute BP proof: current financial position, close confidence, top financial risks, agent actions, assurance state, close forecast, impact, and replay from one command surface.

The believable operating model is event-driven: operational facts become financial events, policies and controls evaluate the event, evidence is attached, and humans approve material actions before write-back.
IC charge posted
| Principle | How Sphere implements it | Current proof point |
|---|---|---|
| Recognition moves closer to the underlying activity | Operational events such as journal postings, reconciliation status, intercompany breaks, asset completion, and accrual triggers update finance state before period end. | SIG-CLOSE-JRN-4408 and SIG-CLOSE-IC-620 are treated as financial events, not period-end cleanup tasks. |
| Controls are embedded into daily processes | SOX, SOD, materiality, evidence, and certification controls run as each financial event is evaluated. | R2R-MAT-002, SOX-CLOSE-404, R2R-SOD-001, and R2R-IC-009 are evaluated before close certification proceeds. |
| Automation is applied where activity is repeatable and rules-based | Recurring checks, journal risk scoring, reconciliation evidence checks, IC matching, and close readiness recalculation are automated; material decisions remain human-controlled. | 318 agent actions today, with 27 human-governed decisions retained for controller judgment. |
| Month-end becomes confirmation, not creation | The close window confirms continuously assembled accounting state instead of discovering missing evidence and blockers late. | Enterprise readiness is 96.8%, with explicit blockers and replayable decision crates. |

Resolve UK Trading to Singapore Trading intercompany mismatch
UK Trading posted a $9.4M intercompany charge. Singapore Trading has not posted the mirror entry, so group elimination does not net to zero.
Recommendation: Create mirror entry or request Singapore counterparty confirmation; keep intercompany certification blocked and recalculate readiness after confirmation.
Create recommended accrual for completed maintenance activity
Maintenance activity is complete and accepted but no supplier invoice has arrived; historical evidence indicates accrual is required.
Recommendation: Create accrual draft, attach work-order and receipt evidence, route to controller, and update close readiness after approval.
Hold North Sea provision journal pending support
Provision movement posted outside normal actuarial refresh cycle and exceeds R2R materiality threshold.
Recommendation: Hold certification, request engineering support, and escalate if evidence does not land by M+2 14:00.
Resolve intercompany mismatch before group certification
Intercompany elimination set does not net to zero because the paired entity entry is missing.
Recommendation: Request paired BPX-NL counter-entry and keep group elimination certification blocked.
Request support for aged balance sheet reconciliation
BlackLine reconciliation is complete operationally but lacks support for an aged balance.
Recommendation: Keep certification blocked until aged schedule is attached and reconciled.
